On September 27, 2024, we celebrated “National Day of Forgiveness”. President Jane DeFrank spoke about forgiving and how it can make a positive impact on our lives. We also had a wild round of “Left, Center, Right” for our mixer. Here are our lucky winners:
We celebrated National Bad Poetry Day at our August 23, 2024, meeting by reciting bad poetry and making up more of our own bad poetry! Here is an example of some our members came up with:
Roses are red, violets are purple, sugar is sweet, and so is maple serple!
Jack and Jill went up the hill to fetch a pail of water, Silly Jill forgot her pail, so now they have a daughter!
Harpreet Kaur from “Right at Home” was our guest speaker in August. She shared valuable information about in-home care and assistance. She also received input from Club members about steps they’re taking in their own homes to keep safe.

At our July 26, 2024, meeting we celebrated National Thread a Needle Day by having a competition to see which table could thread a needle. Everyone did surprisingly well!
Enjoying our June 28, 2024, meeting…
The theme for the May 24, 2024, meeting was celebrating National First Ladies Day. We had an intriguing mixer with information we didn’t learn in high school history class! For example, who was the First Lady that started the Easter Egg Roll on the White House Lawn? Lucy Hayes in 1878 (wife of our 19th President Rutherford Hayes). Which First Lady is still suspected of murdering her unfaithful husband? Florence Harding (wife of our 29th President Harding from 1921 to 1923).
Here is the winning table that got the most answers correct:
We also heard important city updates from Mayor Cynthia Moran:
The theme for the April 26, 2024, meeting was celebrating National Shakespeare Day. Susanne Anderson gave us some fun facts about Shakespeare:
Our Book Club also had a successful book sale for $1 a book!
On March 22, 2024, we had an Easter Egg Hunt. Well, we didn’t really “hunt” for the eggs…they were easy to find! The eggs were filled with candy, lottery tickets, certificates for Bingo games or certificates for Club T-shirts!
On February 23, 2024, we learned more about Black History Month from our member, LaForest Weaver. LaForest explained more about the Black National Anthem: Lift Every Voice and Sing. We also had a mixer with facts about amazing accomplishments of 15 outstanding individuals from inventors and nuclear scientists to Olympic gold medalists.
January 26, 2024, we enjoyed hearing the history of Groundhogs Day! We also had an entertaining speaker, one of our members – Stan Good, who spoke of his experiences with his famous road-side garden in Sleepy Hollow. He also shared how he and his wife purchased the Sleepy Hollow Church and turned it into their residence.
December 15, 2023, was also a fun meeting! We had an
Ugly Sweater Contest,
Sang The 12 Days of Christmas,
Enjoyed Live Music,
and Devoured our Catered Lunch!
Winners for Ugliest Sweaters and Prettiest Sweaters: George DeFrank, Jane DeFrank, Sharon Montagne and Sal Avila.
